Police have arrested 14 suspected gang members believed to be responsible for a spate of criminal activities in Rumbek, Lakes State.

Maj. Elijah Mabor Makuac, the police spokesperson in Lakes State, told Radio Tamazuj Monday that the operation launched on Christmas Eve resulted in the arrest of 14 suspected members.

“Initially, the police apprehended 92 young men, but most of them were released after investigations. Now remain the 14 members awaiting trial,” Makuac explained.

“After we managed to detect them, we captured and collected them in the procession of sharp weapons,” he said. “They were arrested on 24 December, and they spent the whole night in detention, and in the morning, they were screened, and many of them were released. Only, we remain with the 14 young men who have been confirmed to be gang members.”

The police officer pointed out that the Christmas celebrations were generally peaceful in Lakes State.

“We received information on the side of greater Yirol that there were only traffic accidents where people sustained injuries, but they were not serious injuries, and the victims were evacuated to Yirol Hospital, where they are receiving treatment. The vehicles were travelling from Juba to Wau,” he said.

“As you know very well, there is a road construction going on, and this was the cause of the accident”,” he added.
