13 police sentenced for aiding Torit jail break

13 police personnel including five commissioned officers were sentenced to serve prison terms for helping 19 suspected murderers escape a Torit jail.

Earlier in January, 19 people broke out of the Torit prison. The escapees were suspected of taking part in a December massacre of 24 people including women and children between Idali and Torit.

Though the escapees have not been found, the police personnel on duty during the jail break were soon apprehended.

Eastern Equatoria Police Commissioner Major General Edward Demetry Lukak told Catholic Radio Network that the 13 police personnel would serve six months in prison and pay 3,000 South Sudanese Pounds in addition to being dismissed from the service.

Lukak said the five officers have 15 days to appeal the verdict, while the others have five days to do the same.
