Fighting between the communities of Pakam and Luanyjang left at least 12 people dead and 45 others injured in Western Lakes State, local officials said on Friday.
The clashes broke out on Wednesday in Aloor County. The exact cause of the fighting remains unclear.
Zachariah Nanga Marik, executive director of Aloor County, told Radio Tamazuj that at least seven people from Pakaam community were killed and 22 others wounded in the clashes.
The local official accused the community of Luanyjang of neighboring Tonj State of attacking them in Makuei village.
For his part, the minister of information in Tonj State James Ayiek Bath, said at least five people from Luanyjang community were killed and 23 others wounded in the clashes. The local official denied the claims of attack. He instead accused the community of Pakam of attacking his community at cattle camps.
Both sides noted that the fighting has stopped.
The causes of inter-communal violence in the region range from arms proliferation and cattle raids.
