12 dead in inter-clan clashes in Lakes State

At least twelve people were killed and 22 others wounded Monday during inter-clan clashes in South Sudan's Lakes state, according to the state security adviser Marial Amum.

Amum told Radio Tamazuj Tuesday that unknown gunmen suspected to be from the Aliab clan in Rumbek Centre allegedly killed a man from the Gony clan in Rumbek East, prompting the victim’s family to carry out a revenge attack on the Aliab area.

Amum pointed out that the incident resulted into the killing of twelve people from the two sides and the wounding of 22 others. He revealed that the clashes were controlled when the local authorities deployed a security force between the two sides.

“About 12 people have killed from the two sides because the incident took place in agricultural fields there," Amum said. "There are people who were feared killed, but in the morning they were found alive, but they sustained injuries."

Separately, the security adviser said the Yirol-Rumbek town road has been cut off by floods, stopping movement of citizens. The state official called on the national government in Juba to repair the road.
