At least four people accused of offences including murder and rape were sentenced to jail for 10 years each by a Bentiu Mobile Court on Monday.

The court was established on July 21 in the Unity State capital to operate until August 21 following a request to the Governor by the National Ministry of Justice.

Unity State Justice Adviser Samuel Mathok told Radio Tamazuj that three of the convicts had committed murders, while one was found guilty of rape. The 21-year-old man was found guilty of raping a girl, 16, five years ago.

One of the convicts was also ordered to pay blood compensation of 80 cows to the family of the victim of murder in Koch County, Mathok said.

The Mobile Court was established by the National Ministry of Justice with support from the UNMISS Department of Law.

Incidents of conflicts and killings in most parts of South Sudan are attributed to a lack of a functioning judicial system that upholds the supremacy of the rule of law.
