Officials in the Abyei Administrative Area say about 11 people were killed and seven others wounded in an armed attack on Sunday in a village called Dungoub, East of Abyei town.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Kuol Diem Kuol, the area's chief administrator alleged that a group of armed Misseriya men attacked the Dungoob village on Sunday morning.

He said the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) was temporarily deployed in the area following the attack.

"The UN forces play an important role in the peace-building process between Sudan and South Sudan, but Khartoum is not committed," he added.

A press statement by the deputy chief administrator for Abyei, Kon Manyiet Matiok, also stated that one person was killed and another one wounded by the suspected Misseriya Arab militias in an area west of Abyei.

Manyiet condemned what he called 'brutal, barbaric and cowardice attacks of killing innocent people in their residential areas' and called ion UNISFA to arrest all the perpetrators and bring them to book.

Abyei remains a disputed area between Sudan and South Sudan.

Last week, the UN Security Council (UNSC) extended the mandate of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) until 15 November 2021.

The UNSC also resolved that the Abyei Area shall be demilitarized from any forces, as well as armed elements of the local communities, other than UNISFA and the Abyei Police Service. UNSC also urged the governments of Sudan and South Sudan and the local communities to take all necessary steps to ensure that Abyei is effectively demilitarized and to extend full cooperation to UNISFA in this regard.
