A remarkable event took place at Ruweng Administrative Area Hospital as over 100 individuals underwent free eye surgeries.
The eye camp, organized by the Tuach Riek Gai Foundation in collaboration with the Greater Pioneer Operating Company (GPOC), began on June 28th and concluded on June 29th.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday, Benjamin Munybang, the administrator of Ruweng Administrative Area Hospital, expressed his satisfaction with the program, which focused on treating patients with trachoma and cataracts.
A total of 105 patients from various parts of the Ruweng Administrative Area, including seven counties, received treatment for these eye conditions, he added.
Munybang acknowledged the lower turnout of the Ruweng Administrative community, emphasizing the importance of free eye surgeries. He commended the initiative and appealed for the extension of the eye camp, as there is still a significant number of people in the area with eye-related issues.
One patient, Nyakuong Diu, expressed gratitude for the camp, sharing, “I underwent surgeries on both of my eyes. I am among those who received surgeries, and now we have regained our sight. We are delighted with the success of our free eye camp.”
Nyakuong also urged the Ruweng Administrative Area’s government to continue collaborating with humanitarian organizations to assist individuals who have lost their sense of sight.
Stephen Mai Gatkuoth, the project coordinator at the Tuach Riek Gai Foundation, explained their mission to provide free eye surgeries to individuals with eye complications. He disclosed that due to low community turnout, they were able to perform surgeries for 105 individuals instead of the initially planned 500.
Gatkuoth further revealed that the foundation is now planning to implement the “Free Eye Camp” project in the town of Bentiu in Unity State.
