RENK COUNTY - 20 Jul 2012

100 South Sudanese citizens forced to leave Sudan

On Thursday Sudanese authorities handed over approximately 100 South Sudanese citizens to the southern authorities. In April Sudan announced that all South Sudanese citizens must leave their territory.

South Sudanese citizens were picked up at market places and streetcorners and handed over to the Renk County authorities in the Upper Nile state. They appeared to be in good health.

A source told Radio Tamazuj that some prisoners were included in the transfer. He added that 30 people were lost during the process and are currently being tracked down.

Southern Sudanese authorities told Radio Tamazuj that the situation at the border was stable. He added that this is probably due to the negotiations that recently took place in Addis Ababa.
