A 10-year-old girl has died at a health facility in Aweil East County of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State after falling from a tree where she was gathering leaves for food, locals and officials said.
The girl, according to sources, was rushed to the Malual Baai Primary Healthcare Unit on Sunday night where she passed on.
The residents say, the girl, identified as Athieng Mayen, climbed the tree to collect leaves for cooking when she fell.
“Yesterday, I came to the PHCU and I got the child who fell from the tree, and then the child has passed away immediately,” Luka Anei, one of the eyewitnesses in the area said.
Albino Mawiir, another resident said, “Her name is Athieng Mayen 10-year-old. She climbed up to get the leaves of the tree and then she fell in the village called Ameth Akok in Madhol Payam of Aweil East County.”
For his part, Aweil East County Health Director, Ring Yak said the report came to his office on Monday morning, saying that the young girl died of severe bleeding.
“Yes, the information came to me that the child fell from the tree and she died last night at Malual Baai health center,” Yak said. “Medical trials were done to rescue the child but nothing succeeded because she fell on her head and she bled in the brain.”
