At least ten people were killed, and two others were wounded in communal violence in Alabek Payam in Warrap State on Friday night, government officials and residents said.
Sections of the Lou Ariik Community have been fighting for years over a local administrative unit. The violence has resulted in cyclic revenge killings, with both sides bringing in mercenaries from neighboring villages, including Akop Payam and Mayom County in Unity State, among others.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj over the weekend, Agany Lok Agany, the Tonj North County caretaker commissioner, confirmed that the attackers came from neighboring Akop Payam and that ten people were killed and two wounded from both sides.
“Yes, the attackers came from Akop Payam and attacked people of Mading Juer Boma in Alabek Payam. In the incident, eight were killed from Mading Juer and two others were killed from the attackers, and three were wounded,” he said.
Another dweller, who refused to be named for security reasons, stated that the warring groups are from the same payam.
“The feuding sections are from the large lineage that composes greater Alabek Payam in Warrap State’s Tonj North County,” he said. “Some people have been killed in the attack, and we are now in a bad situation.”
