Local authorities in Duk County of Jonglei State said they rescued ten women who were kidnapped by a group of armed men during a raid over the weekend.

Local authorities in Duk County of Jonglei State said they rescued ten women who were kidnapped by a group of armed men during a raid over the weekend.

On Saturday, a group of armed men was reported to have raided Duk’s Pogonkuei village, abducting ten women.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj Saturday, Elijah Manok, the acting Duk County commissioner, said the ten abducted women were rescued by the local youth and security personnel on Saturday.

“Our youth pursued the attackers and managed to rescue the abducted women. Two women sustained severe wounds, but the rest were unhurt. The attackers fled,” Manok said.

He added that “The women had gone to bring their harvest home from the garden when they were attacked by the Murle youth. This happened in a village East of Duk Padiet.”

For his part, Philip Thon Leek, the representative of Duk County in the national legislative assembly, said repeated insecurity incidents have caused panic in the Duk area. He urged Jonglei communities to desist from violence.

“The Murle abducted ten women who went to gather their harvest. The Murle intercepted and abducted them with one man along with them. This is the sixteenth incident in Duk by the Murle. The local youth and security officials followed and rescued all the abductees.” Thon said.
