Awerial County in Lakes State has reported 241 cases of cholera, including 10 deaths, according to local authorities.
County Medical Officer Dr. Michael Kuot Amoot told Radio Tamazuj on Friday that 241 cases had been recorded.
“We have 241 cases of cholera, of which 10 deaths have been reported,” Amoot said, adding that several patients had been discharged after being admitted to the cholera treatment center.
He said there were six new admissions, adding that most of the cases were recorded on islands with poor sanitation and limited access to clean water.
“We have an emergency response on the islands, but when cases become severe, we always refer them to areas with better facilities and management,” he said.
“On Saturday, we hope to visit some of these islands, especially Apayang, Gutthom, Paterio, and Wunthou,” Amoot added.
The medical officer said Puluk Payam leads the six locations with 54 percent of the cases, followed by Abuyung with 36 percent.
“We will be going to those locations tomorrow, especially with the county’s rapid response team, as we are currently dealing with cases in Deng, located within Abuyung Payam,” he said.
Cholera is a highly contagious illness and remains a significant global health threat. The Oral Cholera Vaccine is vital in managing cholera outbreaks, but it is expected to complement, not replace, other control measures.
