At least 10 people have died after a boat sank along the Nile River, close to the area of Pariak in Jonglei State, officials have said.
Ajuot Aluong, Chairperson of the Jonglei Boats Union, told Radio Tamazuj this morning that 10 South Sudanese were found dead after the boat en route to Bor town collided with another boat on Tuesday night.
He revealed that 75 people were onboard the boat when the incident occurred at Mabiorjiei village. Aluong further said 65 people survived the incident.
“Two people sustained injuries and they have been taken to Bor hospital for treatment,” he said.
Meanwhile, the union’s secretary-general Elijah Thongbor confirmed the incident.
“The boat was on its way from Juba to Bor. After it reached Mabiorjiei area near Pariak at 11 pm, another boat that was carrying fresh fish destined to Juba collided with it. As a result, the boat sunk with the passengers,” Thongbor explained.
The official urged people to take additional precautions after the deadly incident.
