10 aid workers have gone missing in South Sudan’s Yei River State, the United Nations said Thursday.
The statement seen by Radio Tamazuj said the aid workers went missing early Wednesday when their convoy driving from Yei town to Tore in Central Equatoria region disappeared.
The world body said the ten humanitarian staff, all South Sudanese, include one from UNOCHA, two from UNICEF, one from the South Sudanese Development Organization, (SSDO), two from ACROSS, three from Plan International and one from Action Africa Help (AAH).
The UN humanitarian coordinator for South Sudan, Alain Noudehou, condemned the latest attack against the aid workers.
Seven humanitarian workers arrested by rebel forces earlier this month in the same area were later released.
"We are deeply concerned about the whereabouts of these humanitarian workers and are urgently seeking information about their well-being," Noudehou said.
Neither the South Sudanese government nor the rebels claimed responsibility for the 10 aid worker’s disappearance.
Rebel spokesman Paul Lam Gabriel said that were unaware of the incident, pointing out a security force has been formed to look for the aid workers who have disappeared in the area.
