A man who hails from Upper Nile State’s Nasir County was shot dead by unknown assailants in the wee hours of Sunday at the internally displaced persons camp in Juba, which was formerly known UN’s protection of civilian (POC site 3).

The chairperson of the camp, Chuol Kier, told Radio Tamazuj on Sunday morning that the incidents occurred at around 3:55 a.m. on Monday when gunshots rang out. He said another Nuer man from the camp who also hails from Nasir is missing, while two other males, from Guit County and Rubkona County in Unity State, respectively, were detained by elements suspected to be from the military.

“The incident unfolded on Sunday at 3:55 a.m. when we heard gunshots. We did not know exactly who was shooting,” he explained. “In the morning, we found out that one person was shot dead and three other people were missing. We later found that two of the missing men were detained by the military.”

Asked if the attackers are from the army, Kier said he could not confirm because he was asleep when the event happened.

“We have the military deployed around the camp, but I cannot confirm who shot the bullets,” he said. “Government forces are now the only ones protecting the IDP camp. UNMISS also partially provides protection, but the government is the one in charge.”

Kier urged the government to protect citizens, investigate the incident at the camp and bring the perpetrators to book.

Efforts by this publication to reach the police spokesperson for comment the incident were futile as his known telephones were unavailable.
