Unknown gunmen last night attacked Maridi wildlife department killing one man and wounding another, in an apparent attempt to steal weapons from the facility, according to a local official.

Unknown gunmen last night attacked Maridi wildlife department killing one man and wounding another, in an apparent attempt to steal weapons from the facility, according to a local official.

County Commissioner Ismail Fatalah Abdullah says the attackers were trying to collect guns but they found a soldier on duty with whom they began to exchange fire. He says one soldier was killed and one wounded and one of the attackers was also wounded but managed to escape without taking guns.

“What happened is that 2:00 last night there was shooting. And this shooting was in the area of the Wildlife and it killed a Widlife personnal and wounded one other, though his condition is not serious. And the main reason is that those people wanted to steal weapons,” said Ismail.

He urged civilians to remain calm and continue with their normal work and business authorities try to found out the identity of the attackers. The shooting caused some fear among civilians but this morning people were moving normally in town, the market was open and students were going to school.

The wounded widlife soldier was taken for treatment at Maridi Civil Hospital.
