At least one person was killed in the UN Protection of Civilian site in Bentiu, in South Sudan's Northern Liech State on Monday amidst deteriorating security situation, a local official has said.
Yohannes Gatnyang, a community leader for Sectors 1 to 5 in the camp, told Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday that the deceased was attacked by a group of 4 armed men who were allegedly planning to steal within the camp.
Gatnyang said the deceased identified as Peter Chok Garkuoth was one of the community guards patrolling the camp at night.
“We are calling on the international community to come to the PoC to resolve security matters here. Please come as fast as possible to protect us, we are targeted. They claim that we are members of the SPLM-IO rebels,” Gatnyang appealed.
Another community leader identified only as Yak also said the security situation in the camp has been deteriorating saying nobody has been arrested in connection to the killing.
