A group of five gunmen staged an attack on the U.N. peacekeepers' base that is currently sheltering civilians in Bentiu town on Tuesday morning, killing at least one civilian and seriously injuring five more, a security committee leader at the camp said.
The attack on the U.N. base in Bentiu, the capital of Northern Liech state, began when gunmen used guns and grenades to breach the compound around 12:17 am, Youhanis Nyang Tap said.
He said the gunmen opened fire at the base but the U.N peacekeepers came to their rescue late. He pointed out that the armed attack resulted in the killing of a primary school teacher identified as Gai Gatluak Bidit and wounding of five others including a woman.
Nyang said that the attackers had come from Kuergeng area.
Radio Tamazuj could not reach UNMISS officials to comment on the incident.
