At least one herdsman was killed and four others injured in an attack carried out by an armed youth group in Duk County of Jonglei state on Saturday, authorities said.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Peter Kuer, the Duk Padiet Payam administrator, said the incident occurred when the armed group attacked the herdsmen while herding their cattle on the outskirts of Duk Padiet on Saturday afternoon.
“The cattle were being grazed at a place one hour from Wuncuei cattle camp when they were attacked. One person was killed and four others were injured. The attackers went away with 10,352 cows. Youths were only able to recover about 1,00 of them,” he said.
The Payam administrator claimed the attack was carried out by attackers from Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA).
Major Majak Daniel Tuor, the state police spokesperson, said the clashes have been stopped since Saturday but could not provide more details saying an investigation is still ongoing.
For his part, Jay Adingora Alual, the GPAA information minister, said they are not aware of any GPAA youth involvement in the attack in Jonglei.
