The police in Lakes State have arrested two suspects over deadly inter-clan fighting that left one person dead and 3 others with gunshot wounds in Rumbek East County.
The fierce inter-clan fighting occurred between Panyar and Pan-gop of Duor sections in the Alau Jarweng cattle camp last Thursday.
The police spokesperson in Lakes State, Major Elijah Mabor Makuac, told Radio Tamazuj at the weekend that the clashes erupted after a disagreement between two men.
“According to the information, these two young men quarreled somewhere but one of them went and ambushed and attacked the other when he was going to look after his lost cow. The two individuals clashed using the sticks when other people intervened to stop them from fighting then he went further,” he explained. “The victim got a gun and shot and started shooting but he was shot dead. The fighting then erupted until many other people sustained injuries.”
Maj. Mabor said the government intervened by sending in forces to go and control the situation and they managed to arrest two suspects.
“The two sections who fought each other were a few individuals from the Pan-gop sub-clan of the Duor section and Pan Nyar section,” he said. “My message to the people of Lakes State is to avoid the use of illicit weapons when you are attacked with sticks. Do not use guns but sticks because if you kill a person, that is a crime.”
When contacted, the medical director at Rumbek State Hospital, Doctor Terran Madit Terran, confirmed that about three people who sustained gunshot wounds during the clashes are receiving treatment at the hospital.
“We have three people who came with gunshot wounds in their legs, arms, and stomach, but they are responding well to the treatment,” he stated.
