A 55-year-old man lost his life in a tragic incident when suspected raiders attacked a cattle camp in Mayom County, Unity State, last Thursday, according to a local official.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Friday, Kuol Keah, Director General at the State Ministry of Information, said that a group of armed men from Gogrial East County in Warrap State carried out the assault on the cattle camp.

“The attack took place at approximately 5 pm on July 6. I received information from Gogrial East County authorities on Thursday that armed youth had left in large numbers to steal cattle,” explained Kuol.

Despite the efforts of local youth, the stolen animals were not recovered from the attackers, he added.

For his part, William Wol Mayom, the Information Minister of Warrap State, refuted any involvement of their youth in the attacks on Mayom County in Unity State.

“I have reached out to the Commissioners of Warrap State, including Gogrial East, and they have confirmed that no armed youth from our region carried out the attack on Mayom County,” said William Wol.

Cattle raids and killings in parts of South Sudan present a major challenge to the government.

Several attempts to address the proliferation of arms in the hands of civilians have not been successful.
