Insecurity has been on the rise in the Ajuong Thok Refugee Camp in Ruweng Administrative Area with the latest incident being the killing of a woman and injuring of two other people on Sunday.
Eyewitnesses who preferred anonymity for fear of reprisals said armed youth from the host community carried out the criminal activities.
Ajuong Thok Refugee Camp was established in March 2013 to accommodate refugees from South Kordofan in Sudan. With an initial capacity of 24,000, the camp now accommodates over 55,000 people. The camp is 70 km from the Yida Refugee Settlement.
The deceased woman, Eptisam Kuwa Anur, met her death while at her house in Block 12 in the camp.
“This woman was at her house when criminals came and started beating some youth at around 9 p.m. on Sunday,” an eyewitness narrated. “One of the youths being beaten ran to the house of Kuwa to seek safety and that is when the criminals opened fire inside the house, killing her and injuring two others. One of the injured people is in critical condition at the hospital”
Efforts to reach Ruweng Administrative Area authorities for comment were futile.
