One person was killed and another was injured in an attack by unknown assailants near the UN POC site in Juba Tuesday evening, the United Nations said.

A spokesperson for the UN mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), Francisca Mold, said in an email to Radio Tamazuj Wednesday that an incident occurred in an area outside the 200m wide weapons free zone which surrounds the Protection of Civilians site in Juba.

She further said one person died of gunshot wounds and another sustained injuries as the result of the shooting which occurred on Tuesday. Mold pointed out that the wounded person is receiving treatment at a medical clinic inside the POC site.

“The whereabouts of other potential victims is currently unknown,” Mold said.

She further said investigations are underway and that the incident was also reported to police authorities as it occurred outside the area protected by the UN mission.

Tap Lual Wol, the chairman of the UN POC3, confirmed the incident.

He explained that unknown gunmen attacked some internally displaced persons near the Protection of Civilians site. “Some boys who live in the camp were attacked by unknown gunmen near the camp, but we don’t have more details about what happened there,” he said.

Lual identified the young man who died as Kot Biel.
