A herdsman was killed and another one injured during a cattle raid by armed assailants in Jonglei State’s Nyirol County on Monday, authorities said.
Nyirol County Commissioner James Bol Makuey told Radio Tamazuj that the armed assailants, suspected to have come from the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA), carried out the raid while the animals were grazing.
“On Monday afternoon, armed assailants attacked Dingnyale Boma in Waat Payam, killing one person and injuring another one. They also went away with 40 head of cattle, but they were later recovered,” he said.
The commissioner condemned the attack.
“On January 27 – 30, we had a peace conference in Juba with our neighbors from Pibor. We agreed that all cattle raids be stopped and now attacks are ongoing. We urge intervention from GPAA government,” said. Makuey.
GPAA Information Minister Jacob Werchum Jouk, said they were not aware of the attack. “We are not aware of the attack and none of our youth could have been involved because they had all relocated to eastern Pochalla. However, we will still investigate if any criminals crossed that side,” he said.
