A cattle herder was killed, two other people injured and 42 head of cattle rustled during an attack in Nyirol County in Jonglei State on Wednesday.

Nyirol County Commissioner James Bol Makuey told Radio Tamazuj on Thursday that the cattle were grazing when the raiders struck. The assailants lost two people during the attack.

“A grazing site in Thol Payam was attacked, one person was killed and two others injured while 100 cattle were raided but 58 of them were later recovered. Two of the attackers were also killed,” he said. “The attackers are Murle criminals from the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) because two of them were killed when they were pursued. We wonder why they would continue attacking us yet we are for peace.”

“We just concluded a peace conference here where a call was made to end cattle raids,” Commissioner Bol added.

However, GPAA Information Minister Abraham Kelang said they were unaware of the attack.

“We are not aware of this attack and we are just hearing it on the media because our Jonglei State counterparts are not sharing information with us,” he said. “They should inform us officially so that we may monitor if indeed those attackers are from Murle.”
