1 dies after vehicle overturns in Rumbek

One passenger died and at least 14 others sustained serious injuries when the vehicle they were travelling in overturned in Rumbek, Lakes State on Monday.

The ill-fated vehicle was travelling from Juba to Aweil.

The Medical Director of the Rumbek State Hospital, Dr Terran Madit Terran, told Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday of receiving 14 casualties from the accident.

“Three out of the 14 were categorized as severe injuries, mostly limb fractures, with the rest being minor,’” Terran said.

He said one of the critically injured patients died in the hospital, adding that they were closely monitoring the rest and had facilitated the transfer of some to Wau.

Lakes State Police Spokesperson Maj Elijah Mabor Makuac said the accident occurred at around 2pm at Rak-majok Village, Matangai Payam of Rumbek Central County.

He said the police helped in the evacuation of the injured to the Rumbek State Hospital.

Makuac said another accident was reported at around 8pm when an unidentified vehicle hit three people on a motorbike, at Pabur Village, Geng-geng Payam of Yirol West County, leading to serious injuries. One of the injured died at around 10pm.

Makuac identified the deceased as Mabor Akol Awer, 17, adding that the other two victims were receiving treatment at a Yirol hospital.

The police boss said a hunt had been launched for the motorist that hit the motorcycle, disclosing that four vehicles had been detained at the Yirol West County Police Station for investigation.
