Clashes between two rival gang groups left one young man dead and five others injured in Torit town of Eastern Equatoria State on Saturday, according to local officials.
The deceased was only identified as Sabri.
Andrew Otok, the Chief of the Ilangi residential area, told Radio Tamazuj that the incident happened at 2 pm after two rival gang groups clashed using pangas, knives and spears. He pointed out that the injured had been taken to Torit Hospital for treatment.
“There was a party, and the fight erupted there. A soldier in uniform was also hurt. I received information that some people have been arrested after the incident,” he explained.
Meanwhile, Oketa Isaac, a clinical officer at Torit State Hospital, confirmed the incident, saying at least one person died on the spot while five others sustained injuries.
“At midnight, we received some cases as a result of violence. The first case we received was a male aged 18,” he said.
For his part, Major General Ali Abadalatif, Inspector of Police at Torit Central Prison, said police personnel have been conducting night patrols to arrest gang groups in Torit town.
“Yes, we are currently patrolling the town; we are moving with patrols,” he said.
