A senior rebel general has abandoned opposition leader Riek Machar and joined President Salva Kiir’s faction in Torit State on Wednesday.
Speaking to reporters in the town of Torit, Major General Edward Aharanya said he returned in response to President Kiir’s amnesty offer to those who are taking up arms against the government.
For his part, the governor of Torit state Tobiolo Alberio Oromo thanked the defected general for accepting the presidential amnesty.
The top state official said the general will be reintegrated to the SPLA army.
Last week, Colonel Peter Ohulis and Brigadier General William Ahari from Kideopo valley abandoned rebellion in greater Ikwoto County and joined the government in Torit state.
Officials allied to rebel leader Riek Machar could not immediately be reached for comment.
