Yei teachers demand new pay structure

Teachers in Yei River State have called on the state government to implement the new salary structure starting from February 2018 before they could lay down their tools.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Friday, Joel Yeka, the chairperson for Yei teachers’ ad hoc committee said they agreed in a meeting that the state government should pay their four months salaries and immediately increase their salaries as of February.

Yeka said teachers are being underpaid in Yei River State, pointing out that they exert great efforts because they want to save the future of the young generation despite the current economic crisis in the country.

He further said they have reached an agreement with the state government to reopen both primary and secondary schools, adding the state government has apparently failed to fulfill their demands.

For her part, Lona Sadia, the state education minister said the state government is committed to meet the teachers’ demands. Sadia said out of seven months’ arrears of 2017; her ministry has paid three months.

She called on the teachers to bear with the government as they are working hard to implement all the demands of the teachers in the state.
