South Sudan peace deal postponed until further notice

South Sudan’s warring sides postponed the initialing of a power-sharing deal in Khartoum until further notice, Sudanese mediators announced.

Sudanese Foreign Minister Al-Dirdiri Mohamed Ahmed told reporters Thursday evening that the planned initialing of the proposed power sharing deal has been delayed at the request of South Sudan government.

“We have just received a written letter from South Sudan government saying it is not ready to join the peace agreement. It said it wants to submit some proposals to ameliorate the document so that the agreement becomes inclusive,” Al-Dirdiri said.

“So we want to give ample time to the parties. It is also an opportunity to look at the new proposals presented by South Sudan government,” he added.

For his part, Sudan Sudan Information Minister Michael Makuei told state media that none of the warring parties was ready to initial the power-sharing proposal today.

He revealed that a government team will be dispatched to Juba on Friday to consult with the country’s top leadership on the key pending issues.

“We are optimistic that when they come back we will be in a position to sign the agreement in its final form,” he said.

Meanwhile, Agok Makur, a leading member of the SPLM-IO movement led by opposition leader Riek Machar said they will sign the power sharing deal when their concerns are incorporated into the document.

“The peace deal should be just and inclusive. We want the issues we disused with the mediation to be reflected in the document. SPLM-IO cannot be excluded from decision-making process in the national legislative assembly. So there is an agreement that there will another deputy speaker so that the SPLM-IO is allocated the position of the first deputy speaker,” he said.
