South Sudan has cancelled its 35th SPLA Day celebrations this year due to the country’s economic crisis.

The country celebrates the day on the 16 of May every year but due to the worsening economic crisis, this year’s celebrations have been called off.

The country’s president, Salva Kiir, has always presided over a military parade and a celebration of SPLA Day.

SPLA army spokesman Lul Ruai Koang told Radio Tamazuj that they have cancelled the celebrations citing financial reasons.

“We are not celebrating the commemoration of the SPLA Day because of financial constraints. We are just congratulating the SPLA soldiers for their sacrifices. One can celebrate it at the individual level,” Lul said.

The army spokesman pointed out that the security situation is generally stable in the capital Juba.
