Peace talks ongoing through thematic committees

The intra-South Sudanese peace talks continued in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa for the second day without the presence of the regional mediation.

Officials at the peace talks told Radio Tamazuj this morning that the negotiations are ongoing between the warring parties through thematic committees on governance, security, and trust building to resolve outstanding issues.

“The three committees all made progress on their topics on Friday,” one of the officials said.

The official further said it is premature to predict the final outcome of the talks because the talks are still ongoing today.

“”The chance of the intra-South Sudanese dialogue making a breakthrough is high, although still there are hard positions from the parties on some matters,” he said.

Mr. Edmund Yakani, a leading South Sudanese civil society activist, said at least there was a sense of responsibility among the parties to deliver peace in South Sudan.

“This is not a little progress but a good indicator,” he said.

Yakani further said the warring parties at the intra-South Sudanese peace talks have started to build positives attitudes for peace-making in the country.
